Tyla Faces Backlash Over Nigeria Tour Stop Amid Xenophobia Concerns
South African Grammy-winning singer Tyla has come under fire on social media after announcing a Lagos, Nigeria stop on her newly unveiled A POP World Tour scheduled for 22 December 2026.
The tour supports her sophomore album “A POP” and includes dates across Europe, North America, Nigeria and South Africa.
Shortly after the announcement a section of Nigerian social media users criticised the decision linking the concert to renewed concerns over reported xenophobic attacks against Nigerians living in South Africa.
Some users questioned whether it was appropriate for the singer to perform in Nigeria while tensions over the alleged attacks remain high, with others calling for a boycott of the Lagos show.
The backlash also reignited discussions about whether South African public figures should speak out more forcefully against xenophobic violence.
Some critics argued that Tyla has not publicly addressed the issue, while others maintained that artists should not be held responsible for political or social conflicts beyond their control.
Despite the criticism, many fans have defended the singer insisting that music should continue to unite Africans rather than deepen divisions.
Supporters argued that cancelling or boycotting the concert would do little to address the underlying issues and instead called for greater dialogue and solidarity between both nations.
Tyla's A POP World Tour marks her first global headline tour, with the Lagos performance serving as the only Nigerian stop before the tour concludes with shows in Cape Town and Johannesburg in January 2027.
